The Red Cross in France, essentially a volunteer organisation, has expanded its actions into many areas. It is a leading provider for fellowship, health, first aid and international humanitarian aid.
The Red Cross promotes a vast number of establishments including hospitals and social- medical facilities. It is also involved with the provision of help to families in need, persons needing refuge, prisoners and their families, persons excluded from society and young people facing crises in their lives.
The organisation
It manages more than 600 social establishments , hospitals and social medical facilities.
It is the leading national trainer for First Aid
It has 60,000 volunteers (including 20,000 trained First Aiders) 16,270 salaried employees nationally, 1080 delegations both local and area, 100 departmental delegations and 22 regional delegations.
An auxiliary to public bodies. the French Red Cross pursues with energy the missions with which it is entrusted. Its vocation is that of extending a helping hand, a gesture that helps to save, whoever is in need.
Sommieres du Clain – A Hamlet that meets a need.
| A SOMMIERES DU CLAIN THE HAMLET SERVICE |
This is a practical illustration, for the Red Cross in France, of the innovative and experimental service structure that comprises :
A residential , non medical, care home for ageing handicapped persons (2/3 of total capacity)
A welcoming centre for persons in need of temporary refuge and accommodation (1/3 of total capacity) . The experimental character of the centre is recognised by the Comite Regional de l'Organisation Sanitaire et Medico-sociale of the Poitou-Charente Region and is listed in the National index of the Etablissements Sanitaireset Sociaux (FINESS)

| THE ARCHITECTURE OF THE HAMLET |
A veritable miniature village, the Hamlet is made up of 35, specially adapted bungalows each with a terrace that opens onto a small private garden. It also contains communal facilities surrounded by lawned areas and car parking.
Description of the Bungalows

There are 35 bungalows each comprising: an entrance hall, a living room, two bedrooms, a kitchenette, bathroom and toilet facilities. They are also equipped with telephone and TV points and a small storage room. In all 68 square metres
- There are 2 visitors lodgings each comprising : an entrance hall, one bedroom, a kitchenette, toilet and bathroom combined. these too have Telephone and TV points and a small storage room. In all 18 square metres. The Communal services Situated in the heart of the Hamlet these services add to the needs and daily life of the residents providing essential additions for their comfort and entertainment.
- A place for conversation and sociability is assured at the help desk from 9h to 19h - Traditional meals are provided in the dining room from 8h to 9h, from 12h to 13h 30 and from 19h to 20h 30.
- The menu is varied and interesting with local and regional dishes.
- Residents laundry is catered for by the on site Laundry facility.
- The sitting room where residents are able to watch television or read the newspapers or meet
and enjoy moments of conviviality.
- Hairdressing :
When needed the hairdressers from Sommieres will visit the Hamlet to provide their services
and offer the same facilities as if in their salon.
- Foot care :
It also possible for a Pedicurist to offer a service when required.
- Medical :
Medical consultations are provided by the Doctors surgery in Sommieres Du Clain.
The Activity Room
There are many activities artistic, expressive and cultural that are offered to enhance
residents days.
Residents are free to choose whether they partake in any of the activities offered
These activities take place from 10h to 12h and 15h to 19h
By agreement with the municipality, the activity room as also available to the
greater community of Sommieres du Clain in which the residents may participate.
It is used for activities such as choral singing , gentle gymnastics….
This enables the community to organise Exhibitions, Conferences and Entertainment.
It also enables the Hamlet to join in and be part of local social and cultural life.
- Green spaces and pathways
All areas and pathways are accessible to persons of reduced mobility.
- The Function
Managed by the Red Cross in France, The Hamlet is open 365/365 days.
It is able to house persons in receipt of Social Benefit Payments and the daily cost is funded by the Consul General. This guarantees that it is available to all who are granted this benefit.
Security at night is assured by active surveillance from 21h to 9h in the morning.
The qualified staff are experienced in providing a caring and convivial environment.
The Hamlet Services has been made possible on the initiative of the commune of Sommières-du-Clain, in association with the Low Cost Housing Authority. Also with the Region Poitou-Charentes budget, the European Community assistance and Civray area Council, a city located 15 km south Sommières.
It has also received financial aid and help from Jerome Lejeune Foundation, the Hamlet Association, the "Gueules cassées" Association, and several others aboth the French Red Cross.
